Things to do in Brookings
Harris Beach State Park
Harris Beach was named after the Scottish pioneer George Harris who settled here in the late 1880s to raise sheep and cattle. The park boasts the largest island off the Oregon coast. Bird Island (also called Goat Island) is a National Wildlife Sanctuary and breeding site for such rare birds as the tufted puffin. The park offers sandy beaches interspersed with eroded sea stacks. Pelican Bay Lighthouse
As the newest lighthouse on the Oregon Coast, Pelican Bay can signal up to 12 miles out to sea. It was first lit in 1999, and stands 141 feet above sea level. This lighthouse is not open to the public, but can be viewed from Brookings Harbor. Call (541) 469.3181 for more information.
Siskiyou National Forest/Kalmiopsis Wilderness
Elevations within the wilderness range from 2,000 to 4,600 feet. The wilderness is located in the central part of the Forest and contains high ridges and steep river/creek canyons. There are approximately 153 miles of trails on 24 established hiking trails in the area.
Sporthaven Beach
This beach is situated between the ocean and the harbor and can be accessed by entering the Beachfront RV Park on Boat Basin Road. There is ample free parking and picnic and camping sites are available at the RV park.
